Playboy Chooses Hottest Cars for 2007.

When Playboy Magazine says something, people (mostly men) listen. It doesn’t matter if they have no background in the subject, limited knowledge or poor taste, Hue Hefner’s voice echoes with the authority of the Wizard or Oz. According to the latest release from Playboy, they actually did their homework before choosing the top vehicles for ‘07. Apparently the vehicles were picked “by an expert team of automotive writers who traveled the globe to test drive every new model they could get their hands on. They covered thousands of miles of the windiest, steepest, most challenging roads to sort the best from the rest”. Wow, that sounds like a tough job, testing cars and traveling the world for Playboy magazine. Wait a minute; I’m an automotive writer, where can I sign up?

On a serious note I have my doubts about the ability of automotive writers to pick out a solid list of great cars without throwing a lemon in the bunch. The only time I was ever part of such a list making team it was to pick the top 25 cars and top 25 SUV’s/trucks for the year. Four of us sat around a table throwing names of cars that we had never driven onto the table. When it came time to pick SUV’s it got even worse. We came up with about three, then stuffed the names of random SUV’s inside apples, threw them in a tank and bobbed to pick the rest of the top 25. Not exactly a scientific process and it might explain why the Pontiac Aztec made the list. If I’ve learned anything in my short career as an automotive journalist it’s that car writers are generally unscientific about reviews, usually bad drivers and often know very little about cars. So with that in mind let’s reveal Playboys list of hot cars for 2007.

BEST TWO-WAY PLAYER: VW Eos
Folding metal top opens and closes at the touch of a button

BEST SPORTS COUPE: Porsche 911 Turbo
The Turbo sprints from zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds

BEST SUV: Cadillac Escalade
Features a muscular 6.2-liter, 403 hp V8 and smooth six-speed automatic

BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Ford Shelby GT500
Wide-mouth upper and lower grilles, and old-style front air dam, and a
rear spoiler

BEST PICKUP: Toyota Tundra
Five inches wider and 10 inches longer than its predecessor

BEST ROADSTER: Saturn Sky Red Line
Traction control, a limited slip differential and antiskid technology all
come standard.

BEST CROSS-DRESSER: Mazda CX-7
Wedge-shaped hatchback with knife-edge grille, 18-inch wheels and chopped
roofline

THE AL GORE SPECIAL: Lexus GS 450h
Sports sedan hybrid combines a 3.5-liter V6 with a high-output electric-
drive motor

PLAYBOY’S 2007 CAR OF THE YEAR: BMW Z4M Coupe
Boasts a 3.2 liter, 330-hp high-performance in-line six cylinder with a
six-speed shifter

Amazing, I can actually support or outright agree with the majority of this list. My only real complaint would be the Saturn Sky Redline as “best roadster”. I’ve never driven a Redline, but have driven a normally aspirated Sky, and while it’s a pretty good looking vehicle and not a terrible performer there are plenty of roadsters out there that are more nimble, more fun, and better put together. I also would be tempted to throw the Corvette in the “best bang for your buck” category. Overall a solid list, especially coming from a magazine where bunnies are the number one focus.

About William

I am a twenty something car enthusiast. I spend most of my days working in a small restoration shop in Northern California that specializes in vintage Alfa Romeos. I also manage to do some freelance writing for a handful of automotive publications. When I'm not at the shop I can usually be found working on one of my own project cars, out driving on a good windy road or good jeep trail. Despite what my girlfriend says cars aren't what defines me, they are only what I do. When I have a chance I also love to go camping, play sports or generally do any type of outdoor activity. I don't take myself to seriously, so I hope you don't either.
